Be prepared as the latest PHH news isn’t too positive…two of the kids stole 50,000 rupees ($1,100) from a priest at St. Joseph’s school in Gitdubling. The good news…the money was recovered, the bad news…Fr. Felix, the school principal is furious. Kids have run away, lied, been very disobedient, and even broken an imported statue of St. Joseph (the school’s patron saint), but pinching the teacher’s salaries went too far. The alleged thieves, who will remain nameless, have apologized and returned the money, but only after an 8 hour scavenger hunt orchestrated by them to keep the loot. If only they would apply such vigilance to their studies I am certain that we would have several Einsteins in our midst. The other highlight is that only a handful of kids actually passed their exams thus far, however, most failed by only a few subjects, except one little girl who failed 8 out of 8. Some how they usually pull it out in the end and pass, but it’s always a little discouraging when you see their report cards. However, it’s important to remember that PHH kids haven’t had a good educational foundation. The students were recently home for a short holiday so we gave them a good pep talk and also bought them some desperately needed clothes. And, as a reward to those students who passed we treated them to a new Bollywood hit which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Delighted to report about a Project Helping Hand first which is that one of our sponsors, Wendy Kavanaugh from England, came to Darjeeling. We went to visit her child Alina Gurung at St. Joseph’s School in Nimbong, about a 7-hour trip from here. Wendy braved our winding, rough roads and even a night in a convent sans electricity, but had a wonderful time seeing the school and meeting Alina. They had a chance to spend time together and get to know each other. Wendy spoiled Alina and made her feel very special. I can tell you that Alina will never forget the time they spent together. All sponsors are encouraged to come over for a visit. In the next two months, the children will have their final examinations and then return home for the winter break. By the end of December we should have the final school results which we will share with you. Despite many of the trials and tribulations of the project, the children have improved dramatically in their studies and behavior. And most important, they are safe and nurtured at their schools. Thank you for your continued support of them all. |
